decided i don’t need my best foot always forward with every single person i meet
i’m letting my hair grow down, trying to remind myself that not everyone i meet is an instant celebrity. in my mind, i’m working up to you; in reality, you should be working up to me.
my reciprocity is inherently one-sided making my flock impossible to herd, my ice impossible to unfreeze.
pouring hot water on the car door handle — duality is snowshoes and soaked feet — pouring slow honey into fast tea. i’ve stopped thinking about it as i fall asleep.
in my mind, i’m looking up to you; in reality, you should see that i want to be something that’s not good for me or you.
decided i would rather trudge through the snow instead of see you.

re-meeting you at brunch, acting as if you’ve never met me before
when you and i both know you’re the guy outside my window,
yelling when i can’t sleep, keeping me up is a courtesy.
halfway through the conversation, you let it spill.
less guarded you’ll admit to anything
walking up closed down streets, putting traffic cones in front of turning lanes
as a chore, you play in the roadway as the steady stream of brake lights stops on reds
as a courtesy, you’ll keep me up
as a favor, you’ll ask for my name (you knew it anyway)
as the truth reveals itself you’ll find i know more about you (and you about me) than either of us had originally thought
